FISHERY AND FISHING
REPORTS
THE FISHERY:
CANCUN is known to be primarily a
TARPON
and SNOOK
fishery all year round with best chances at
BONEFISH
and PERMIT
in the summer months, CANCUN continues to be the best fishery of all in the
area for being in the center of this locations,
(Ascension bay south and Isla Blanca
north of us) In Cancun, We
make an average of 50 grand slams per season
(tarpon, bonefish and permit in one
day) and over 30 super slams
( grand slam plus SNOOK)
this, no other location can beat with a single boat, TARPON
in the 20-50lbs. range are available all year round, and larger migratory
80-150lbs. class in the summer during spring time,
SNOOK
in the 5-20lbs. class are often caught on the flats or the mangrove
shorelines. BONEFISH
in the 2-6lbs. class are mostly the size fish are found here, but good
chances at 8-10 pounders are available also and the always elusive
PERMIT
averaging 6 to 30lbs, plus the
¨non-glamour¨
species such us Jacks,
Snappers, Ladyfish, Barracudas, Sharks
and more are plentiful as well. So a
chance for fly-fishers or spinners to hook-up on something is almost
guaranteed.
THE FISHING NOW:
The fishing is very good now, we are mainly targeting
TARPON and
SNOOK this time of the year. Lots of
bait is drawn into the backcountry lagoons and lots of fish is following
them, so We are running into good schools of fish, Our customers are
constantly landing POONS in the
15-60lbs range, we are also hooking-up on larger ones in the deeper parts of
the lagoon, 70-90lbs. fish). but you have to be very patient for those,
getting 4 to 6 shots on them in the day is excellent…. Big ones are around,
but not peak time for them, (The smaller fish is more active and provides
more shots), our anglers are getting at least a dozen of shots per day and
some days up to 45 shots and more, if you do things the right way you will
land lots of fish), the SNOOK got
better with the last cold front, they are being pushed from the deep on to
the flats for warmer water. 80% of them are caught sight-fishing in 1 to 3
feet of water. Plus the ones we are targeting along the mangrove shorelines,
because of a short cold front from last week,
BONEFISH and PERMIT were push off
the flats into deeper waters, some big BONES
and PERMITS are already cruising
the flats and we are taking some shots at them also, they will pick up as
the shallows get warmer, when that happens we will start catching lots of
them, the best time of the year for them, (MARCH
thru AUGUST are the peak months).
NEW REPORT:
came back from Honduras and have been non stop
guiding here for the past 7 months), this report is from my last 3
days of fishing, (Mr. Bruce and son Patrick charter me for 5 days, the
TARPON is behaving awesome, so we’ve
been working hard on them, they’ve had a total of 36 hits on tarpon in 2
days and has released 14 fish in the 10-35lbs. class, we tried fishing for
the bigger ones today in the deeper waters, we got there early and saw a few
nice ones rolling, but not constant, the surface was still a bit cold and
that was keeping them down longer, we decided to stay any way, as I told
them, Why leave fish to find fish, and they
agree, the sun started coming up and it was good, cause we then spotted a
school of 5 maybe 8 fish that was more active, we give them some extra
minutes rather than rushing into them, I then started sneaking up on am,
finally got close and had Patrick make 1st. shot, he hook-up on a
70 pounder and landed it 1hr. later on a 10wt. flyrod, later his Dad had a
90+ on for almost 20 minutes, unfortunately he broke the 16lb. tippet after
a jump where it got raped on the gill plates and there went his chance, we
tried getting more shots at them but wind pickup and was pretty difficult to
see them with the wakes, so we decided to target some
SNOOK now that sunlight was better, we
manage to get at least a dozen of shots and were able to hook up on 7 in the
4-20lbs size, we saw some bones around but they were cruising fast rather
than feeding, I am tacking them wade fishing for Bones and Permit tomorrow
down south at a nice flat, they want to do that on their 4th. & 5th.
Day, bones are slow here now and much better south, I was there last week
with a different angler and he caught 11 bonefish, had some shots on permit
and landed 1 that was at least 17lbs., let’s see what happens tomorrow,
I’ll let you know on my way back.
