My name is Capt. Rodman Hunter, I am originally from Tampa, FL, and English
is my 1st. speaking language, my story goes like this, I left Florida
at the age of 2 and came to Cancun with my mother which is Mexican, I come
from a shrimp fishing family that is based in Florida, Mexico and Honduras
bay island, this last destination is the one I owe my entry to this type of
fishing, I live in Honduras for 8 years (from 8 to 16) on a small key where
90% of our house was built on the water and with miles of white sand beaches
and crystal clear waters loaded of fish on each side, so I grew up hand
feeding 100-200lbs. tarpons of my dock almost every day, cause most of our
house being on water, this Poons use to live under the house and could here
them crashing and feeding on baits all day long, even when we were at sleep,
I spent lots of time swimming with those fish on my youth and I learned what
they like and don’t, on the other side, the bonefish and permit was
and every day fact aswell, I used to wake up, look outside my window or
take a walk on the dock and I would see the flats teaming with fish, huge
schools of bonefish tailing and permits rooming the banks with the stingrays, and this was an unresistible call for me to run for my gear and get a rod
bent and a screaming reel, so on this type off fishing , my knowledge
came on early age when I was a young boy, I started guiding people at age
of 10, I am 35 years old now and haven’t stop doing it, (I believe I
wouldn’t be able to do something else so good and that I like, and also too
late to find out, so why do it, I better keep fishing and guiding for the
rest of my life).
It means that I have over 20 years of flats fishing experience and other
types also, whether you’re Flyfishing or spin casting, I will do my job with
unfailing performance, I have the talent of finding fish when and where
no one else can, this has been proven time and again by virtue of the fact
that my boat is rarely empty of willing clients, I consistently catch fish
under all types of weather conditions and have often brought to the boat
some really amazing fish. I have had some outstanding catches but I don’t
really believe in sacrificing a fish just for the sole of seeing your name
in print, I not only teach fishing but also appreciation for our fragile
environment, conservation of fish stocks, their habitat and water quality
are responsibilities that all anglers must share.
I have a family now (son & daughter that I spend my time off fishing with)
so I am based in Cancun most part of the year, I eventually sneak out and
get hired to guide on other areas like, the Cancun surroundings (Boca Paila,
Ascencion bay, Isla Blanca, and gulf coast) other countries like, Belize,
Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Venezuela, with all this experience I
have achieve from fishing different locations and countries every year, I
bring to the sport of flats fishing a vast wealth of knowledge not only in
the art of catching super slams species, (Tarpon-Bonefish-Permit & Snook)
and other species that inhabit the flats, but also the personality that
evokes the feeling of fishing with a very good friend.
I’m well known for my patience, enthusiastic and easy going type of
instructor & guide, I pride myself on being an all around type of angler,
I fish with anglers of all skill levels, Pro’s, Advance, Novice, Kids and
with Families, and have the exact gear and attitude to match every skill
level, if necessary I’m happy to give a few pointers rather than criticism,
that’s one other side you must consider, the personality of your guide,
who’d want old salty on your back, barking orders at you for 8hrs. or worst, not being able to get you out of the ditch cause lack of communication and
fishing techniques or knowledge specially when you’re a 1st. timer or novice
in the area, and again , have to face yourself on your own, for the trip
of your lifetime and not get what you have paid for.
If you want to catch fish and have a great time with a talented guide,
fisherman, teacher and friend, give me a call or send an e-mail in Cancun, where the fishing can’t get any better than this.
